The Gainesville State College Bookstore has been moved from the Student Activities Building to the middle of nowhere.
What was originally going to be the supply storage for the theatre has been allotted to the new bookstore. This is due to the renovation of the Student Activities Building, which will go under construction on Oct. 1. The construction could take between a year and a year and a half to complete.
Martha Nesbitt, president of the college, and Paul Glaser, vice president of the business and finance department made the decision to relocate the bookstore by the overflow parking lot. Their plan was to make it easy for students to reach the new bookstore and find the books they needed.
Although students can go to the previous bookstore and find directions posted on the door, many still have a hard time locating the new one. Despite the trouble with obscure new location, students have not complained, according to Jackie Mauldin, the store's manager.
"Students have been very patient and understanding with us," said Mauldin. "So far we have received no complaints because they understand that the whole move is due to the construction that's going on," she added.
The new location is not the only downside to the new bookstore. The former bookstore gave students the opportunity to look carefully for their books and other school supplies. In the new bookstore, employees have to find the students' books, which has occasionally lead to giving them the wrong books. The new store has limited space available, which makes it hard to hold a large crowd of students. Many must stand outside while waiting in line to purchase their materials. Students are at least provided with bottled water and hopefully hot chocolate or coffee will be made available in the winter.
Students may not have complained to the store's employees, but have indeed complained amongst their peers. "My friend had to drive me down there because I couldn't locate the store myself and when I got there I wasn't impressed," commented Karen Hernandez, 18.
Students may not be impressed with the new bookstore but at least they should know that there is a new one on its way. Soon students will not have to go a long distance to get basic supplies because there will be supply vending machines in different parts of the school to make it more practical for students to access basic supplies.
