Mr. Andrew Santander is the Music Area Department Head. He teaches jazz band and jazz combo classes. He says jazz "encompasses many sub genres like swing, New Orleans jazz, bebop, cool jazz, Latin jazz, and fusion." There are so many things that jazz has inspired. Classic movies that feature jazz performers often perform scat. Scat is just like beat boxing only you make slightly different sounds. Scat was recently performed in last years American Idol by contestant Blake Lewis.
Santander is not the only one teaching music. David Thomas conducts the chorus and also teaches voice. He pairs up with Santander to teach music theory. Joanna Kim teaches the school's piano classes. The Symphonic Band is directed by Mercer Crook, who also teaches the woodwind class. Don Strand teaches and directs the brass ensemble. Brass is also taught by Shelly Miller and Craig Stephens. Alison Heyes teaches woodwinds, while Kyle Dawkins teaches guitar. Laurin Smith directs the new string ensemble and also teaches string, along with Mary Alice Swope. There are also several teachers who teach music appreciation: Tammy Yonce, Robert Snead, Joseph Frank and David Brown.
There are so many instruments that are played at GSC. There are some from the jazz band like trumpets, saxophones and trombones. Then you have some from the rhythm section like piano, guitar, bass and drums. This year they have added a little bit of a variety with additions like the flute and tuba.
The music department's first show will be held at 12 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 in the student center. The performance will feature the jazz combo and jazz band performing a Latin inspired concert. All students are personally invited to come down and enjoy the music. If you miss it, there are many more concerts to add to your schedule. Students who play instruments who are not in any music classes should consider signing up for one next semester. If you are unsure, go see these students play and be inspired by what you hear.
