Gainesville Theater Alliance seniors are already in preparation for their senior thesis known as the Discovery Series.
The Discovery Series is divided into nine different plays throughout the fall and spring semesters. The seniors began brainstorming and assembling their cast and crew during their junior year. From there they decided who was going to be involved in the various aspects of the productions. Afterward, each group started preparing their performances.
The Discovery Series plays are more contemporary and edgier than the GTA's mainstream performances. "Some of the most exciting theatre is in the Discovery Series," said Jim Hammond, artistic and managing director of the GTA. He is performing in senior Sarah Smith's Discovery Series play, "Educating Rita." "I'm thrilled," said Hammond in regards to being able to perform in Smith's thesis performance. "Sarah Smith is one of the best actors to come through the program," Hammond said. "Educating Rita" will be performing at the Ed Cabell Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15-17.
Ebony Johnson, GTA senior, is the director and actor in the one woman show, "Beauty's Daughter." "It is a special thing for me," said Johnson on having creative control on the whole project. The performance will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27-29 at Brenau's Banks Recital Hall. "Beauty's Daughter" is more mature than most plays with adult content.
Tiffany Towns and Claire Guy are also excited as they prepare for their Discovery Series performance "Tissue." "Tissue" is "such a human story," said Guy, director of the play. After 4 1/2 years in GTA, this is the time to show what skills and talents they have acquired during their time at GTA. "It feels like a great sense of accomplishment," Towns said. Guy believes "Tissue" not only reaches out to women, but to men also. "Tissue" will be at a location yet to be determined at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9-12.
The Discovery Series performances are free to the public. However, they will be accepting donations at the events. Dates and locations of the Discovery Series can be viewed from GTA's website at www.gainesvilletheatrealliance.org. Most of the performances are not suitable for children.
