GTA Season Forecast
This season at the Gainesville Theatre Alliance is sure to be a memorable one with a heartfelt musical, a comical tale, a French farce and a poetic tragedy. The plays are as colorful as ever, serving up human compassion to the audience. Each play is more distinguished than the last.
The season opener, "The Emperor's New Clothes", is presented by GTA's Wonder Quest. Originally based on the story by Hans Christian Andersen, it's a comedic portrayal of a vain emperor whose only concern is his wardrobe. His obsession for clothes leads to a need for the most beautiful cloth money can by, or is it? The emperor is duped by two swindling tailors while the townspeople are left in wonderment of the emperor's new outfit. The performance will run from Sept. 28 to Oct. 6, at Brenau's Pearce Auditorium. The play is directed by Gay H. Hammond and there was a stage tour on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. The tour featured a backstage look at the creation of such a visually stunning performance The play is intended for a young audience but should satisfy the entire family.
The follow up, "Children of Eden", is a joyous musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The story is by John Caird and the musical is based loosely on the Book of Genesis. The two act play starts off with creation and ends up focusing on Noah, and not to mention that ark he built. The composer of "Wicked" and "Godspell" creates a vivid story that brings a new meaning to parent child relationships. Changing scenes are accompanied with a song performed by the biblical characters. Another family event sure to entail laughter and joy. The performance will run from Nov. 6 to Nov. 17 and will be performed at Brenau's Hosch Theatre.
In the coming 2008 year GTA changes it up a bit with a bedroom comedy. A satire farce by Georges Feydeau, features a woman desperate to catch her husband's infidelity. A once thought out plan turns into a wild goose chase as new and outrageous characters are introduced throughout the play. "A Flea in Her Ear", delves right into marital chaos with a witty twist. The performance will run from Feb. 12 to Feb. 23 at Brenau's Hosch Theatre.
The season closer is "Barbary Allen", a tragic love story that takes place in the Appalachian mountains. The play, by Gay. H. Hammond, was inspired by "The Ballad of Barbary Allen", a song known for having many different versions. The song focuses on the forceful love one dying man feels for Barbara Allen. She never returns his love and lives a life of grief after he dies. The song itself has been passed down through word of mouth and has no known author. "Barbary Allen" is heartfelt tale of true love and the loss of it. The performance will run from April 15 to April 26 in the GSC's Ed Cabell Theatre.
