Nichols Diner, formerly known as Dairy Mart, is located in the Fairground Business Center on Atlanta Highway, Oakwood. It's a good burger and fries joint, especially if you're tired of eating food that may have been made by a computer at one of the chain restaurants on the main drag of Mundy Mill Road.
Upon arriving I noted that the parking lot was almost vacant. However, not everyone eats lunch at 2 p.m. So I strolled in optimistically, ordered my food at the counter, and had a seat.
The place had a few customers but was relatively quiet. It only took a couple of minutes for my food to prepare. As I received it I noticed the shiny stainless steel counter and preparation area were immaculately clean. Unfortunately the same thing could not be said for the dining area. It was passable except the walls running along side the booths were pretty dirty.
A 50's style motif kept the place from being completely industrial looking. All of the seats were covered with blue vinyl, which contrasted harshly with a room that was otherwise stark white. Chintzy retro signs hung on all of the walls. It reminded me of a Rock n' Roll McDonalds cross bred with a school cafeteria, but the food was much better. I had a cheeseburger, onion rings and a sweet tea that were all fantastic. Their menu also included; BBQ sandwiches, roasted chicken, milkshakes, sundaes and flurries. The price was just as good, I barely spent over five dollars.
Nichols is just far enough away from the waking nightmare of construction to maintain a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. If you know your way around Oakwood, you could cut down by the Oakwood Police station and up Allen Street on the back roads to Atlanta Highway and avoid all the construction.
This restaurant is a convenient and affordable place for college students to eat. Nichols is open for lunch and dinner and also features a drive-thru window if you're in a hurry. It's a place you can eat, relax or maybe do some light studying in between classes
