Gainesville State College is honoring Judy Forbes with the first Outstanding Advisor Award in GSC history. Advisors are finally getting recognized 43 years later for their dedicated efforts in guiding students. This award is to honor excellence in advisement and is voted on by our peers, faculty and staff.
"Academic Advising is critical to student success and it is important to honor advisors who have gone the extra mile," stated Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Mary Lou Frank. Candidates for this award are required to have been at GSC for over three years and have at least three years of service as an advisor. Candidates are randomly nominated. The student body and faculty submit their nominations to the candidates' home department. After the nominations are received, the department then nominates a candidate to represent them. A committee is then formed by the faculty senate to make the final decision on the leading candidates.
This award is presented at the beginning of each academic year. To receive an award is an honor and usually represented by a plaque. However, the winners of this award also receive a $200 check to use as they wish.
Advisors that go the extra mile deserve recognition and even compensation for their hard efforts. When faculty members are honored for their hard work, everyone can celebrate the things they have done and encourage others to work harder. This is because people recognize the importance of it.
Forbes was awarded because the faculty felt that she was the most deserving candidate. She has helped many students, including those in Learning Support.
"Since I have been here I have heard nothing but wonderful things about her work, and I look forward to seeing many other great advisors receive this award as well," said Frank. When Frank was asked bout Forbes' reaction to the award she replied, "She was really excited and humble about the award, and we are all happy for her."
Forbes was not the only advisor to receive this award this year. GSC's Oconee Campus had a separate winner. The Outstanding Advisor Award there went to recipient, James Kozelman. Honoring our faculty and staff has become a serious part of our school community, as well as voting for those who go above and beyond their responsibilities. Advisors who contribute more will be recognized from now on.
