"That was both of our goals. To come back early and be able contribute," said UGA wideout Sean Bailey.
Bailey was referring to himself and fellow senior running back Thomas Brown. Brown and Bailey are both recovering from ACL injuries and, over the first three games, they are doing more than just contributing.
Bailey leads all receivers with 163 yards receiving and one touchdown. Brown has been a threat as a runner and in the passing game. In three games he has three rushing touchdowns and one touchdown reception.
Bailey missed all of last year after injuring his ACL in a 2005 Sugar Bowl practice. Brown tore his ACL during the 2006 season against Vanderbilt.
Brown has wrecked havoc on opposing defenses so far this season and he has the hardware to prove it. Saturday against Western Carolina Brown became the twelfth player in UGA history to surpass 2,000 yards rushing. "I was not aware of it all," said Brown. "I was kind of shocked and amazed."
Bailey's numbers are amazing considering this senior missed all of last season. Overall in his injury-plagued career, Bailey has 817 yards receiving and eight touchdowns.
With running back Kregg Lumpkin out due to a broken thumb and having a wide receiver corp that was plagued by drops last season, there could not have been a more critical time to get back two exceptional leaders. These guys lead the best way they know: by example.
After three games the Georgia Bulldogs are 2-1. Despite the play of Brown and Bailey, the Dawgs suffered a disappointing loss to SEC rival South Carolina in their second game of the season. UGA is behind in the SEC and they will face Alabama this Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is ranked 16th in the nation and is lead by returning Coach Nick Saban. Next week, the Dawgs will go on to face Ole Miss.
