Joy Evans was jumping up and down on a trampoline.
Her abundant brown hair floated in a bubble around her head with each bounce as her excitement was clear regarding the new services the Counseling and Career Department has to offer. "It's great for your digestion," she said as she jumped off, "and getting rid of that extra pent up energy."
Dr. Joy Evans, director of counseling and career department at GSC, is quite the personification of her given name. Her delight came across her face in the form of a smile especially when referencing the new Wellness Center that has been established within the department. "We believe in order to help a person psychologically we have to look at a person from a mind, body and spirit approach to counseling," said Evans.
The trampoline is not the only unexpected piece of furniture in the room. A massage table sits up against a wall and a vast literary and video library ranging from topics such as depression to energy work covers another. The typical chase lounge and wing-backed chair do not exist in this office.
The center also has computer programs that can help with relaxation techniques and can teach a person to meditate by reading heart and skin responses, said Evans. "This is great for people who have anxiety," she emphasized with a sincere look on her face.
The idea of connectedness and holistic healing is not all that new. At one time it had "a kind of stigma" around it, "now it has almost no stigma at all," according to Evans.
The Counseling and Career Department offers students a personal approach to career counseling as well. A student can make an appointment with the Career Specialist of the department Major Nelson or the Assistant Director of Counseling and Career Department Dr. Edward Wai-Ming Lai. They will look at "their interests, values, personality, and skills to assess what career would be best for the student," said Lai.
According to Lai, most students come in for help to declare a major as well as finding a job and transferring to another school. It is the department's mentality that "career and personal go hand in hand," said Lai, and it is important to utilize both.
Behind the closed doors of the office and the blinds that clink and clatter as they hit against the glass, exists a world where people are attempting to create serenity and peace of mind for the students here at GSC. The services are extensive and the people are committed to helping the community of GSC. These services are open to anyone on campus.
Students are invited to visit the department any time. The most hectic times in the Counseling and Career Department office tend to be from August to the end of the semester, according to Evans. An appointment may be necessary.
