GSC celebrates Black History Month

On Monday, February 4, at noon, Student Center Stage, the African Performing Arts Association will present a program of African Cultural Heritage by the West African group, Sama To.

The 2nd Annual Minority Student Faculty and Staff Recognition Reception is an invitation only event and will be held on Friday, February 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wednesday, February 13, at 12 noon on the Student Center Stage, the GSC Jazz Band will perform.

A Night of Love Poetry, Jazz and Movie will be presented on Friday, February 15 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Continuing Education/Performing Arts Center. Galen Razzaq of Washington, DC will perform jazz selections on the flute and the audience will participate in a poetry session. The evening will conclude with a showing of the film "Paris, I Love You". The film is made possible by a grant from the French American Cultural Exchange as part of the Tournées Film Festival through GSC's Institute for Global Initiatives.

Good things will be cooked up with "A Taste of Soul Food" on Monday, February 18 from 12 - 1 p.m. in the Student Center. Students will taste the homemade, southern cooking of the African American family.

The African American Male Initiative (AMMI) Conference will be held on Friday, February 22 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Continuing Education/Performing Arts Center. The invitation only conference is designed to challenge African American males to succeed through awareness, motivation and action.

The "L.A. WATERS AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE RECOGNITION BANQUET" which will be held on Saturday, February 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hugh M. Mills Physical Education Complex. Tickets for the event are $30 per person and benefit the L.A. Waters Scholarship Fund at the Gainesville State College Foundation. For tickets call 678-717-3654.

"The Great African American History Debate" will be held on Monday, February 25 at 12 p.m. in the Continuing Education/Performing Arts Center. The student debate will surround the topic: "Have perceptions of African Americans changed with the validation of their contribution to our history?"

Black History Month will conclude with "Surviving the Pain and Wounds" presented by PFC Channing Moss. A former GSC student and Black Student Association member, Moss will share his experience of surviving a rock propelled generated attack while fighting in Afghanistan.

The Gainesville State College Black History Month Cultural Events Series is being sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs and the Special Recognition Committee. Event co-sponsors include the Black Student Association, Institute for Global Initiatives, International Student Association, Latino Student Association, Debate Club and Music Department.
