In the heart of downtown Winder a campus evolved in 2002, through a partnership between the City of Winder, the Barrow County Board of Education, the Barrow County Industrial Development Authority and Barrow County government.

The campus has recently received upgraded classrooms and now efforts to expand the 25,000-square-foot facility are underway to serve the growing community.

Lisa Maloof, director of the Winder campus of Lanier Technical College, said that the new classrooms will give GSC students more options.

"Having this equipment in the classrooms will give Gainesville students more options ... to offer more classes during various times throughout the day," Maloof said.

The Winder campus of Lanier Tech provides space for several GSC classes. Maloof said that the center usually offers about two-three class options at the facility, which should change in the future with the possible expansion efforts.

The upgrades to the rooms include Smartboards, network computers with Internet connection, ceiling projectors, DVDs and VCRs.

Maloof said that the Winder campus is unable to offer additional courses until more space is available.

Dr. Mike Moye, president of Lanier Technical College, has presented a request to the Barrow County Board of Directors, to place an amount of money into a planning document in order to renovate a new facility for the Winder campus.

The current facility is located at 93 E. Athens St., and more than 300 students are attending at the former Duck Head Manufacturing building.

The Winder Educational Center currently offers several certificate, degree and diploma programs that lead to associate of applied technology degrees, technical certificates of credits and diplomas. The center also offers continuing education services to advocate adult learning.

The plan is to work with local governmental authorities to renovate a new space for healthcare programs, a residential HVAC program, media services and other programs at the Winder-Barrow County campus.
No building has been specified as of yet for a new location.

The request that was presented to the board by Moye, provides for renovation in the event that a building is decided on.

If a new facility must be built, rather than renovating a currently standing building, then a different request must be presented to the board.

Moye said that at least five different options have been discussed for the expansion effort. At one time, the former First Baptist Church on Broad Street was brought up, but discussed more recently was the potential construction of a new building.

A determination has not yet been made, but discussions are still underway for the effort. The project will need to be approved by the State Board to be considered for state funding.

Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars have already been voted on, approved and allocated to renovating a structure for the campus.
