Otis Rothenberger and Jim Webb, Professors of chemistry at Illinois State University proposed the question "Is it Chemistry or Magic?" to Gainesville State College students on March 10th.
The duo from ISU made chemistry interesting by using comedy. The audience was informed and entertained.
"I thought it was fun but had a strong message," said Ellen Moomaw, GSC assistant professor of chemistry.
According to Rothenberger's ISU webpage, this chemistry road show is in its third decade.
The ISU duo typically shoots for a younger audience, around the age of 10 or 11.
Rothenberger said he was introduced to chemistry around the same age.
"My dad would come home and present chemistry to me as magic," said Rothenberger. The demonstrations performed by Rothenberger and Webb will intrigued the audience as they mixed chemicals making them change colors, formation and glow right before everyone's eyes.
Near by onlooker, Julian Byrd, said their performance was "exceptional, well put together and keeps your attention."
Besides chemistry experiences, Rothenberger explained to the audience why chemistry is important and its role in society.
"We do outreach to keep the general public informed of our profession," said Rothenberger.
